Thousands of people live in a camp near the Iraqi city of Mosul. They all left their homes to escape weapons and hatred. In the huge refugee camp, the longing for safety, security, and a carefree everyday life is growing—especially among the youngest.
They live tent to tent, hut to hut, hoping for an end to the violence: the children in the huge refugee camp in northern Iraq. A team from ARTHELPS visited the young refugees in their temporary home and held several workshops with them, crafting, painting, dreaming, singing, dancing, and laughing.
There were hardly any guidelines – the children were free to express what was on their hearts through colors and shapes. Some looked back to their homeland, others painted their vision of a better future. Unconstrained, honest, and through a child's eyes.
We digitized some of the symbols and drawings on a computer right there in the camp with the young artists. They are the heart of the UN/HIDE idea.
Each hand-drawn symbol represents an individual dream, together they form the UN/HIDE camouflage design. A colorful pattern at first glance – but closer to the sketches, you'll discover the dreamy and expressive soul of the design.
